Where the Bookwalter system idea began
The idea for the Bookwalter® Retractor emerged in the 1960s during an emergency operation, when Dr Bookwalter realised that what mattered most wasn’t who was holding the retractor, but how consistently it stayed in place. That moment sparked a new way of thinking about surgical exposure.
By the early 1970s, Dr Bookwalter began developing early prototypes, experimenting with mechanically held retraction systems that could be securely mounted to the operating table. Through hands-on refinement in real operating environments, the concept evolved into a stable, adjustable ring system that allowed surgeons to position and secure retractors exactly where they were needed.
The result was a notched, single-post retractor system that delivered reliable exposure throughout complex procedures.
